On the Fourth of July Paul takes William, our son Jim and me on a drive 90 minutes north along the Missouri River to Garrison Dam. It was built in 1947-1953 and is the fifth largest earthen dam in the world. The locals claim that the resulting Lake Sakakawea has more coastline than California's Pacific coast. It is impressive and we enjoy surveying it as well as the hills and farmland we see on the drive. In the evening a smaller family group gathers to kick back and enjoy a taco dinner.
Thursday is relaxing. It gives us a chance to continue to watch the flock of wild turkeys which have made a home on Barb and Paul's back acreage. If the turkeys step on the concrete surrounding the pool brother-in-law George races toward them flapping his arms and cawing, scaring them away. It is a sight to see!
After hugs and thanks on Friday morning we hit the road for home. We take a southern route through Sioux Falls and LaCrosse. The road takes us within a few miles of the Spam Museum.... a "must see" in southern Minnesota. We can't resist!
It has been a bittersweet trip, with the burial service on one hand and the laughter and fun on the other. But all throughout the week there has been a glorious undercurrent of the love of family
