Our First Day in Budapest

We arrive in Budapest a little after noon on Wednesday.  We got a little sleep (1-2 hours) on our flight from Chicago to Munich and a catnap on the flight from Munich to Budapest so we were very happy to see the man holding a sign with our name on it after baggage claim.  Being taken directly to our AirBnB is such a stress reliever!  Bence from the management company is already at the apartment and has texted me he is waiting for us.  We sit back in the car and enjoy the ride.

The apartment is as we had hoped, with a wonderful old-world feel and (mostly) modern amenities.  There are high (14-16 ft.) ceilings and parquet hardwood floors in the hallway, living space and bedroom.  The kitchen has the modern amenities of a microwave and dishwasher in addition to a good-size refrigerator and full stove.  A clothes washer in the bathroom is a modern plus but is oddly paired in the same room with an old-fashioned bathtub.  There is a separate water closet, complete with an antique toilet.  The entire apart is clean and well maintained.

After some light unpacking and a 2 hour nap we are off to stock the apartment with basic supplies and provisions for tomorrow's breakfast.  Bence told us of a store less than three blocks away and we have no trouble finding it.  It is one of the Spar chain of stores, small, but with all that we need to get us started.  We walk home with a full bag of groceries and six 1.5L bottles of water which all told cost us 8,350 forint ($30 dollars).

After storing the groceries our attention turns to dinner - William is starving and I am very hungry.  We consult TripAdvisor for restaurants nearby and choose Fuego, which looks to be a fast-casual spot.  Happily we find out that it has full service.  We are offered a table for two near the front and quickly order  glass of wine, a pint of beer, a whole chicken and some crispy potatoes.  As we later overhear the waiter telling some people who have wandered in "If you like chicken, this is the place for you.  If you don't like chicken, this is not the place for you".  We like chicken and this in the perfect place for us this evening.  The drinks arrive within three minutes and the meal seven minutes later.  Admittedly we are very hungry, but the chicken is flavorful, moist and delicious - we eat all but one thigh before we stroll back to the apartment full and happy.  We crash into bed.
