Adiós Familia y Amigos

The familiar wake up call from Brent comes much too early - 6:30am.  It is time for us to have our luggage outside our doors and to head to breakfast.  We have one last chance to see the smiling faces of the crew and waitstaff.

By 8am we are all on buses to the Ushuaia prison museum.  Argentina used the island as a significant prison colony until the 1940's.  It was actually President Peron who closed the prison.  The Museum has sections which show the original conditions for the cellmates which were considered hard offenders.  It also has converted some of the sections to art galleries and of course a souvenir shop.

The group is then transported to a hotel until the buses leave for the airport.  William and I contact the manager of the apartment we are renting for a few days in Ushuaia.  It's hugs and kisses to Dan and Martha as we separate.

Ushuaia is a small city of 80,000 and is the southern-most city in the world.  Our studio apartment is within the city center, but everything is close within Ushuaia.  The apartment is a basic studio, but it will do for three nights.  The manager is kind and allows us to drop our bags in the apartment while the cleaning crew is still working.

We go out to explore the town, have a lunch and buy some basic groceries while they complete their task.  We walk down the stairs to the major shopping street.  The stairs remind us of our stays in Cuenca, Ecuador.  As we walk along we see tempting bakery and the landmark of the local Catholic church.  The view of the nearby Andes is inspiring.
